About Smarter Cruising

Clark NortonI first fell in love with boats as a boy -- riding the car ferries with my family across Lake Michigan, from Ludington, Michigan, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

For a 10-year-old, crossing the lake was an exotic experience, a heady mix of crisp sea breezes, seemingly endless blue waters, and uncharted territory lying beyond. Those voyages ended all too quickly; Lake Michigan was mere hours across.

As an adult, I've developed a passion for cruising, where for days or weeks at a time I can savor my love of the open water in far-flung settings amid comfortable surroundings and like-minded passengers.

I've cruised the coast of Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the South China Sea, the South Pacific, the Amazon, and many points beyond -- and am now plotting my next cruise around the tip of Cape Horn in South America.

I've been lucky: I make my living as a travel writer, which gives me plenty of opportunities to take cruises and to write about them. (My work has appeared in publications such as Hemispheres, Outside, Family Fun, and The Washington Post Magazine, and travel guidebooks for publishers such as Fodor's, Hunter Adventure Guides, and Mobil Travel Guides.)

But one of the things I like most about my job is helping my readers discover the joys of cruising as well -- most of all by finding ways to make cruises more affordable for everyone.

When I'm not out exploring the world by ship, I live near the Delaware River in upstate New York with my wife, Catharine; our cat, Fresno; and two kayaks (alas, Fresno doesn't like the water). If you see me on the river, give a wave -- better yet, I hope we meet on a cruise somewhere in the world!
